mIRC
mIRC is a very reliable and solid IRC client available for
the Mac, Windows 95/98/NT and Win 3.1. To get a copy, you can go to http://www.mircx.com and find one.
- Once downloaded, you can run the executable program and that will install mIRC onto your system.
- Once installation is complete, you can run mIRC by finding the icon in your Start menu.
- After the program has started up, you will see the following screen:
- You can choose a Network and/or a server to connect to or accept a random one of mIRC's choice. It's your
call.
- Your name should be whatever you would like your name to appear as.
- Your E-Mail address should be your E-Mail address.
- Nickname and alternative are also your decision.
- Clicking Invisible Mode will render you invisible to /whois commands.
- After you are done with that screen, click on the Local Info tab.

- On this screen, you will want to leave these fields blank. Have Normal chosen for the method.
- After you are done, click on the Options tab.
- These settings are up to you.
-
Connect on startup will automatically connect you to the server specified on the IRC Servers tab.
-
Reconnect on disconnection will reconnect you to your server in case of disconnection, both intentional and
accidental.
-
Pop up setup dialog on startup will bring up the menu you are currently in when you start mIRC.
-
Move server to top of list on connect will automatically move the server you connect to to the top of the
servers list so that it will be easily accessible if you need to find it again in the future.
- After you are done, click the Identd tab.
- This tab is very important. You will want to have Identd server active if you want to connect to most of the more
active Networks and servers on IRC. The User ID setting is going to be the username setting when people do a /whois on
you. Setting the User ID to "me" will make your host look something like:
User is me@myhost.self-serv.net * My Name or something of the sort. The other options
should be left as they are. The important thing to remember is to enable the Identd server.
- After you are done, click on the Firewall tab.
- On this tab you will only need to enter information if you are behind a firewall. That information will have to be
provided to you by your administrator or network specialist. After you are done with that, click OK and you will be
ready to connect!
- Click on the left-most icon (the lightning bolt) to connect to your server!
- The following screen will come up:
On this screen you will see the Message of The Day as well as other information about the server you
selected.
- You will now want to join a channel. In the example below, I joined #chat. I just typed /join
#chat and hit enter to get the following screen:

Congratulations! You're now on your first channel and will soon be on many more to come! Have a good time
chatting and, as soon as you want to quit out, type quit or click on File and then Exit.
